Frequently Asked Questions

Listed below are answers to a few of the most common questions that I am asked about the services that I provide. Feel free to contact me if you have a question that isn’t answered here.

Why do you recommend WordPress?

WordPress is a free, open source, content management system (CMS) originally developed as a self-hosted blogging platform. Since it’s release in 2003, WordPress has evolved into a robust publishing platform used on millions of websites.

One of the main benefits of using WordPress for your website is that WordPress allows you easily add, edit, and maintain your content using a simple rich-text editor and an intuitive administration interface. No messing with code and no calling your webmaster.

Additionally:

  • WordPress is user-friendly and easy to learn.
  • WordPress is extremely SEO friendly.
  • WordPress is easily extensible with thousands of available plugins.
  • WordPress is developed and supported by a very large and active user community.

Why do you use the Genesis Framework?

The Genesis Framework is a WordPress theme framework that serves as a flexible foundation allowing for quicker and more efficient WordPress theme development.

The benefits of using the Genesis Framework include:

  • SEO – The Genesis Framework provides superior control over your SEO settings and helps your website rank higher in the search engines.
  • Security – The Genesis Framework is built using a highly secure codebase which has been audited by security expert and core WordPress developer Mark Jaquith.
  • Customization – The Genesis Framework is highly customizable, providing many hooks, actions, and functions that allow for quick and efficient development.
  • Modular Code – Using a common codebase across all projects allows developers to reuse and repurpose sections of code across projects, saving time and lowering development costs.

Designer vs. Developer?

Designers and developers play different, yet complementary, roles in a project. Designers are responsible for the overall look and feel of a website, using layout, color, and typography to communicate the client’s vision. Developers take a completed design, and transform it into a functional experience for the site’s visitors.

While some people specialize in both design and development, I prefer to focus on development. As a front-end (aka client-side) developer I receive a completed design from a designer and translate it into code (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) so that a web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer) can display a live, interactive site.

What web hosting do you recommend?

Bluehost is my hosting company of choice for most websites. For websites receiving heavier traffic, I recommend WP Engine. Both hosts provide great service and support.
